Entry-level Sportage comes with a 140bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine

Kia’s new Sportage 4x4 will cost from £14,495 when it goes on sale in January 2005.

That buys an XE-trimmed Sportage with a 140bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine and a five-speed manual gearbox. The same car in XS-trim costs an extra £1500.

A 173bhp 2.7-litre V6 petrol engine is available only in XS trim with a four-speed automatic ’box for £18,495. A 110bhp 2.0-litre diesel version will go on sale in March and prices will be announced in February.

All cars in the range are fitted with front, side and curtain airbags, remote central locking, alloy wheels, electric windows, air-conditioning and a CD player. The Sportage in XS-trim also includes cruise control, climate control, heated leather seats, an electric sunroof, heated door mirrors and stability control.

The Sportage is based on the same platform as the Hyundai Tucson. It uses that car’s four-wheel-drive system, which sends power to the rear wheels when the front wheels start to slip. Like Hyundai drivers, Sportage owners will be able to engage permanent four-wheel drive at the flick of a switch in demanding conditions.
