Kia is recalling 974 Sportage off-roaders in the UK

Kia is recalling 974 of its recently launched Sportage off-roaders for checks on the stability-control system.

Owners of XS models have reported that the system can activate unnecessarily. Kia said only one owner in the UK has been affected so far and that there was no resulting loss of control of their car because of the fault.

The company is asking the owners of all XS models made before the end of February 2005 to take their cars to their local dealer for a free upgrade to the system. Electronic stability control brakes individual wheels and cuts the throttle if it detects an imminent skid.

Sportage owners who require further information can contact the Kia helpline on 0118 945 8545 or e-mail kiamotors@vehiclerecalls.co.uk.
