Renault has released the fastest Laguna so far as part of a mid-life makeover, which also promises better handling and improved build quality.
The updated Laguna is available to order now with first deliveries expected in March 2005.
A new GT 205 model is priced from £21,350 and, as its name suggests, offers 205bhp. It can reach 60mph in 7.2sec and has a top speed of 146mph. It has a bespoke suspension set-up for sportier handling but Renault said all models should now be better to drive than before.
The company said it has also focussed attention on improving the quality of materials and build in the cabin. It said controls in the cabin are now easier to use thanks to a new layout.
The 1.8-litre petrol has been axed, so the cheapest models are now based on the 135bhp 2.0-litre petrol engines. They are the only engines to experience a drop in power, with a 5bhp reduction. In entry-level Expression trim the Laguna is £200 cheaper than before at £15,775 for the hatchback and £16,775 for the estate.
Turbocharged versions of the 2.0-litre petrol are up 5bhp in output to 170bhp and now available in cheaper Dynamique trim from £17,925. The 210bhp 3.0-litre V6 engine is now only available in Initiale trim with a rise of £660, bringing the price to £23,475.
Entry-level 1.9-litre diesels are also up 5bhp to 95bhp and rise £100 to £15,925. The 120bhp engine increases £100 to £16,575, while a 10bhp more powerful Euro IV version is available for an extra £300.
The Euro IV version saves £9 a month in company car tax for a lower-rate taxpayer in 2005, but models registered after January 2006 will be more expensive when the 3% rebate is scrapped. Fuel consumption is also more than 3.4mpg worse at around 47.9mpg. The 150bhp 2.2-litre diesel is now £110 more expensive at £19,924.
Dealers might be reluctant to offer discounts immediately but buyers should not accept anything less than 15% off the list price of any model. Broker Carfile (on 0870 833 2152 or www.carfile.net) said it can already offer 18% off the cars.
