The British Motor Show is to move back to London after 30 years at the NEC, Birmingham, in a bid to give visitors better value for money.
The next show, in summer 2006, will take place at ExCeL in London’s docklands. Major motor manufacturers are behind the move in an attempt to reduce the cost of the show and encourage more visitors.
Last year the Birmingham show attracted more than 450,000 visitors, which, although an increase on previous years, is part of an overall decline. Recent shows have included attractions like off-road driving courses, customer test drives and a live action arena in an effort to tempt visitors.
Christopher Macgowan, chief executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, which organises the show, said: ‘We believe the move to ExCeL will build on the show’s rich history, giving it a platform that will reclaim its international reputation’.
The country’s first motor show took place at London’s Crystal Palace in 1903. In 1978 it moved to the NEC Birmingham. The 100-acre ExCeL site currently hosts events such as the London Boat Show.
