Volkswagen will expand its Golf range in the next 12 months with the addition of two new four-wheel-drive cars: a high-performance model to top the existing GTI and a ‘baby Touareg’ off-roader.
First to arrive is the R32, powered by a 250bhp 3.2-litre V6 engine. All-wheel drive will aid traction, helping to make the R32 one of the fastest hot hatches on sale; 0-60mph should take around 6.5sec while top speed will be limited to 155mph.
Company sources have told Whatcar.com that the R32 will arrive in November, priced at around £24,000. This artist’s impression reveals a discreet body kit, distinguished by a deep spoiler and large alloy wheels.
The second new Golf will be a toughened-up ‘soft-roader’ version of the high-roofed Golf Plus due in 2006. Expect a raised ride height, protective cladding around the wheelarches and restyled lights to give the model a different character.
Although essentially a road-biased 4x4 to rival the likes of the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4, the Golf will have some limited off-road potential. Its suspension should it pass over rocks, while the Haldex four-wheel-drive system sends drive to the wheel with the most traction.
No name has been announced yet for the new model, although rumours from Germany suggest it could be called CrossGolf or Marrakesh. Prices should start at around £19,000 for a 2.0-litre.
