Volkswagen has given its Polo supermini a striking new front-end look and new diesel engines.
The supermini uses the latest Volkswagen family-look grille and at the back there’s a new V-shaped window and updated lights. Inside there are new fabric designs, instrument clusters and steering wheel.
Petrol engines are carried over unchanged, but the 63bhp 1.9-litre diesel is replaced by a 69bhp 1.4. The three-cylinder diesel is also available with 79bhp to replace the current 74bhp engine.
The car is on sale in continental Europe from April with the same prices as before. It goes on sale in the UK in June, and although Volkswagen UK hasn’t released final specifications and pricing, it says it will follow this lead.
Prices should therefore start at £6995 for a 1.2-litre petrol, climbing to £14,425 for the 130bhp GT diesel.
Other supermini face-lifts and all-new models on the way
The Volkswagen Polo platform is shared by sister companies Seat and Skoda for their Ibiza and Fabia superminis. The Fabia was face-lifted late in 2004, but the Seat won’t get its update until next year. All-new versions of the superminis will start to appear in 2008.
The all-new Renault Clio is expected late this year, while the Fiat Punto and Peugeot 207 should also break cover later in 2005. Sales of these two cars may not start until early in 2006, however.
