One in four British drivers is suffering from failing eyesight – which is posing a major threat to road safety.
Specsavers Opticians tested the basic vision of 3000 drivers at the recent British International Motor Show, and 700 of them failed. The test asks motorists to read a car’s numberplate from a distance of 20.5 metres, and forms part of the official driving examination.
The RAC Foundation said that many motorists, having passed the sight test when they passed their driving test, assumed this qualified them for life. In fact, driving with uncorrected vision is an offence which carries a fine of up to £1000.
Edmund King, executive director of the RAC Foundation, said: ‘It is vital that drivers have their eyes tested at least every two years, regardless of whether or not they wear spectacles.’
