Vauxhall is preparing a high-performance Meriva for launch in spring 2006. It will be powered by a turbocharged 180bhp engine – enough to make it the fastest mini-MPV on sale in Britain.

Managing director Kevin Wale told Whatcar.com that Vauxhall was keen to extend its VXR performance range. The Astra VXR arrives in showrooms in September, followed by the Zafira VXR in October.

‘Our intention is to have a VXR version of each mainstream model,’ he said. ‘We think we will have a Meriva VXR by spring 2006.’

The fastest Meriva will probably cost around £15,500. It will be distinguished from lesser models by a butch bodykit and extra equipment.
