BMW’s new range-topping 5-series will develop 333bhp – that’s 47bhp more than its predecessor, the 540i.
On sale from October, the new 4.4-litre V8 model will cost £41,555. It can sprint to 60mph in 5.8sec, 0.4sec faster than the 540i, although top speed remains limited to 155mph. Despite the extra grunt, combined fuel consumption is improved by nearly 3mpg to 25.9mpg.
It will go on sale alongside the £26,995 525i, which uses the same engine as its predecessor but is 0.2sec faster from 0-60mph, with a time of 7.9sec. Top speed is unchanged at 148mph, while its fuel consumption remains at 30.1mpg on the combined cycle.
Emissions figures for both cars are not yet available, although the 525i is unlikely to move from its 29% company car tax bracket while the 545i should sit in the maximum 35% band.
