The RAC has launched a free legal helpline after its research showed drivers do not know their rights following an accident.

The 24-hour Collision Care helpline is open to all motorists, not just RAC members, and can provide advice on when and how to claim for compensation following an accident.

The motoring organisation says it has noticed a steady increase in the number of motorists calling following accidents with uninsured drivers. It says one in 10 still do not realise they can pursue a claim through the Motor Insurers Bureau in these circumstances.

Overall the RAC reckons only 25% of motorists are fully aware of their rights.

While it can provide advice to any motorists through the new hotline on 0800 566384, it is only able to legally represent its own members.

The Motor Insurers Bureau can be contacted on 01908 830001.
