New head restraint feature is available on Espace models

Renault will introduce a child-safety feature in the Espace MPV to help reduce the chances of neck injury.

The device is a special brace built into the middle row's headrests, which works similarly to the HANS (head and neck safety) device worn by Formula 1 drivers.

The brace supports the child's head and neck even if it falls asleep. It also reroutes the seatbelt so it sits more comfortably on the child's shoulder rather than across the neck.

The device is suitable for children aged between six and 10 years and is available now in the Espace as a £50 option.

Renault says it plans to develop a similar device for the Laguna family car and Megane small family car, while one will be available on left-hand-drive versions of the new Clio. It is not certain whether new UK-spec Clios will get the feature.
