Saab’s 9-3 has become the first car ever to win two top awards in gruelling US crash tests.

Saab's 9-3 saloon won the top ranking in both side and front impact tests

Saab’s 9-3 has become the first car ever to win two top awards in gruelling US crash tests.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has awarded the saloon its top Best Pick ranking in side impact assessments. It earned a top ranking in frontal impact tests last year.

The tests simulated a side impact from a large 4x4 travelling at 31mph and weighing just under 1.5 tonnes – about the weight of a Land Rover Freelander.

Euro NCAP testers have also awarded the maximum five stars to both the Saab 9-3 hatch and convertible and to the 9-5 saloon in equivalent European tests.
