Ageing XK is to be replaced

Jaguar has announced three new models as part of a radical shake-up of the way it builds and sells cars, which will include redundancies at its famous Brown’s Lane plant.

It revealed that a new sports car, to replace the ageing XK model, will be produced at the manufacturer’s nearby Castle Bromwich factory along with the new XJ. This will mean the end of car assembly at the Brown’s Lane facility, which has been Jaguar’s spiritual home for the past 70 years.

Jaguar has also announced plans for a new high-performance diesel version of the X-Type compact executive, to be launched next year.

As part of the shake-up, Jaguar disclosed that it would review its sales and service network to improve its dealerships.

Jaguar recently cut production by 15,000 cars a year because of lower than expected worldwide sales. This drop in production could reduce the supply of cars available to the UK market, particularly dealer pre-registrations and vehicles available at car supermarkets.

In total, 400 jobs will be axed at Browns Lane, with a further 425 jobs being transferred to the Castle Bromwich facility.
