Yeti concept hints at a bold future for Skoda

Skoda has said that it wants to make more radical looking cars in the future and has prepared a second striking concept to show it means business.

The Yeti is an off-roader which falls midway between a Fabia supermini and Octavia small family car in size. It takes centre stage on Skoda’s stand at the Geneva Motor Show next week.

While there are no definite plans to build the Yeti as it is, the 4x4 shows a clear development of a bold new Skoda look, which started with the even more outlandish, asymmetrical Roomster MPV concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2003.

The most unusual elements of both cars may never make it to production vehicles but details of the Yeti and Roomster, like the grille and headlights, clearly show a new look evolving.

We will have to wait until next year to see how brave Skoda will be with a production car when it launches the second-generation Superb family car.

The new Fabia supermini due in 2007 is also likely to incorporate these elements as well as MPV-like cabin features found on the Yeti and Roomster.

After that, the company is likely to branch out into the compact MPV segment. A Renault Scenic rival is likely by the end of the decade.
