Volkswagen will launch its new Passat estate this autumn with prices from around £16,000 – undercutting key rivals such as the Honda Accord Tourer and BMW 3 Series Touring by at least £1000.

Our exclusive artist’s impression depicts the new estate, which will adopt a sleeker look than its boxier predecessors, putting the emphasis more on sporting style than outright baggage-carrying capacity.

A variety of clever interior packaging measures are expected, including a drop-down front passenger seat, which folds flat to extend the load bay. Although no official figures are available yet, insiders told Whatcar.com that boot space will trump that of the outgoing model.

Engine and trim choices will mirror those in the Passat saloon, which goes on sale on June 24. Buyers can pick between 1.6- and 2.0-litre petrol units, and 1.9- and 2.0-litre turbodiesels.

Front, side and curtain airbags, ISOFIX child-seat mountings, active head restraints, air-conditioning, remote central locking, front electric windows and door mirrors, a CD player and 16-inch alloy wheels will all be standard.

‘Estate sales in the past have made up around 30% of Passat registrations in the UK,’ said a spokesman. ‘We expect that to grow with the new model.’
