Sporty updates for Saab 9-5

04 September 2003

Saab will unveil its revised 9-5 saloon and estate range at next week’s Frankfurt Motor Show.

A new 220bhp 2.3T engine replaces the 3.0 V6t, slotting between the existing 185bhp 2.3t and 250bhp 2.3 HOT. It will cost £22,500 in entry-level Linear trim – £950 less than its rival, the Audi A6 2.4 V6. The new powerplant emits 212g/km of carbon dioxide, so buyers will pay company car tax on 26% of the list price.

Range-topping Aero models feature a number of sportier cosmetic changes including redesigned front and rear bumpers, reprofiled sills and new 17-inch five-spoke Evo alloy wheels. Prices will rise by £605 to £27,400 for the saloon and £28,600 for the estate.

All models in the 9-5 range will be fitted with anti-lock brakes, front and side airbags, and a Saab Information Display (SID) with improved graphics similar to those found on the 9-3. Inside, sporty upgrades will include a lighter grey leather upholstery and a matt black fascia.

An audible seatbelt reminder function has also been adopted from the 9-3. The incorporation of this system gives the 9-5 a maximum five-star Euro NCAP rating.
