Suzuki’ new Swift supermini will cost from £7499 for a 91bhp 1.3-litre petrol-engined model.

The entry-level three-door GL car will not be available until June, but five-door versions go on sale on April 15 for £7799. A 101bhp 1.5-litre GLX five-door is also available from launch for £8999 with the standard five-speed manual, or £9824 with the four-speed automatic.

All models in the range are fitted with driver, passenger, side and curtain airbags, anti-lock brakes, Isofix mountings for child seats, front electric windows, heated and electrically adjustable door mirrors, a CD player with steering wheel-mounted controls, remote central locking and 60/40 split-fold rear seats.

The GLX costs £1200 more than the entry-level GL and gains air-conditioning, keyless entry and ignition, alloy wheels and front foglamps.

A 68bhp diesel version will go on sale in September, and a sportier 1.6-litre petrol model arrives in 2006 alongside a convertible version with a folding metal roof.
