Mercedes head restraints anticipate collisions

Clever head restraints that anticipate rear-end collisions and help minimise whiplash injuries are now standard in many Mercedes models.

Unlike existing active restraints that move forward in reaction to a collision, the Neck-Pro system senses when a crash is about to happen and prepares the car ahead of the impact.

Pre-tensioned springs in the seats move the headrests forward by 40mm and upwards by 30mm, providing better support for the necks of front-seat occupants.

While ordinary active head restraints need to be repaired or replaced after an accident, the Neck-Pro system can be re-set with a tool provided with each car.

The system is now fitted as standard in the C-Class saloon and estate, CLK coupe and cabriolet, E-Class saloon and estate, and CLS saloon. The new S-Class arriving next January will also feature the technology.

  • Proper positioning of head restraints is crucial if they are to help minimise whiplash injuries in accidents. Ensure they’re positioned as close to the back of your head as possible, and in line with the top of your head.
