Vauxhall is taking its next step into the high-performance arena today by unveiling two sporty Astra hatchbacks.
The 240bhp High Performance Concept makes an appearance at the Paris Motor Show later this week and will go on sale as the Astra VXR by the summer of 2005.
Vauxhall says the high-output hatch can reach 60mph from standstill in less than 6.5sec, and hit a top speed of 150mph.
This performance outguns that of the 197bhp Honda Civic Type-R, which sprints to 60mph in 6.6sec and peaks at 146mph. However, the Astra VXR is likely to cost nearly £4000 more, starting at just under £20,000.
The 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol Vauxhall also out-performs the forthcoming 200bhp Volkswagen Golf GTi, which should also cost just under £20,000, and will appear on UK roads next January. The Golf hits 60mph in 7.2sec and has a top speed of 146mph.
For those who cannot wait for the Astra VXR, Vauxhall has just put a 200bhp five-door Astra SRi on sale. Performance figures are not yet available but the car is priced at £18,145.
