Volvo is getting ready to expand its S40 and V50 range with a new Sport trim and cheaper entry-level 1.6-litre engines.
Sport-specified cars should be available from October or November, and will sit between S and SE models. Prices will start at around £17,500 for a 1.8-litre petrol.
Available with all engines in the family, the models feature lower, stiffer suspension for a sportier drive, larger 18-inch alloy wheels and foglights. Styling changes include a more aggressive front bumper and side skirts, while the cabin trim has aluminium inlays.
The 1.6-litre models will be available from early next year. Prices are likely to start at £15,000 for the 100bhp petrol, which will only be sold with the S40, and £16,200 for the 110bhp diesel.
No performance details are available for the engines, which will spell the end for the previous-generation S40 and V40 which are still being sold badged as Classic models.
