VW builds four-wheel-drive Golf

Volkswagen has launched four-wheel-drive versions of its Golf small family car in Germany, with British versions expected to follow next summer.

Volkswagen has launched four-wheel-drive versions of its Golf small family car in Germany, with British versions expected to follow next summer.

The 148bhp 2.0-litre FSi GT petrol and 138bhp 2.0-litre TDi GT diesel models will use the latest version of VW’ 4Motion four-wheel-drive system. First used in the last-generation Golf, it has now revised to make it quieter and easier to maintain.

The system can now divert as much as 100% of the power to the rear wheels if it detects a loss of traction.

Twin exhaust pipes and a 4Motion badge mark out four-wheel-drive Golfs from their front-drive siblings.

Prices haven’t yet been confirmed, but the four-wheel-drive versions are likely to carry a £1300 premium over their two-wheel-drive equivalents.
