‘Motorists unconvinced about road tolls’ - Against road charging

26 October 2005
‘If I had to pay the sort of charges they are talking about, I couldn’t afford to get to work! At the end of the day, I just want to get to work on time, and home as quickly as possible as I have a life outside of work and cannot spend all my time travelling on inadequate public transport.’

‘With fuel duty already being imposed on motorists at such a high level, we are effectively already being charged to use the road on a ‘pay-as-you-go’ scheme. Why add more cost and complication to an already efficient system of ripping motorists off?’
Tom Walters

‘We already pay enough for our cars. My partner has ours most of the time, which means I have to use public transport. Only three years ago I was paying 70p per bus journey, now it’s £1.20 for exactly the same bus, but I see no improvement for that additional cost.’
Paul Riches

‘I don’t believe this is going to decrease road congestion one bit. The vast majority of drivers are driving because they have to. It’s just another way to get us drivers to cough up even more money. They claim the majority of drivers are going to save money, but it’s pretty obvious it will generate more money and be more expensive to most drivers.’

‘There will also be a substantial increase in business costs. I would hate to think how much extra this would cost Royal Mail delivering to urban areas. Whatever the business, these additional costs would have to be passed onto the consumer.’
