‘Motorists unconvinced about road tolls’ - For road charging

26 October 2005
‘It has to make sense, ideally backed up by charges varied by vehicle emissions. Is anybody actually suggesting that if we do nothing congestion and pollution will cure itself? Time to get real, I think.’
Mark Hamlin

‘I hate the idea of having to pay for something which is now free, but the system works in Singapore and I’d rather pay than be constantly immobilised by congestion and totally frustrated. Something has to give.’
Nick Chapman

‘Surely everyone would like less congested roads? I am convinced that road pricing would lead to less congestion. However, it is essential that fuel duty is not reduced. In fact, it should be increased, as it is burning fuel that is causing so much of our carbon dioxide emissions and contributing to global warming. Vehicle excise duty should be abolished.’
Tim Eyles

‘It is an interesting problem. The roads here are now diabolical. It used to be fun to drive but now it’s more of a chore. I am for pricing as long as public transport is improved dramatically.’
Richard L

‘Great for all drivers like myself who do not cover many miles per year. Those who use the roads most also damage the roads most. Hence they should pay the larger portion for the upkeep of the road network.’
Andrew Smith
