The 2012 Mercedes A-Class will be available from £18,945 when it goes on sale in the autumn, undercutting entry-level versions of the new Audi A3, BMW 1 Series 5dr and Volvo V40 by between £260 and £1125.

A 168bhp diesel version will join the range later, while an AMG version with a 300bhp+ petrol engine and four-wheel drive will arrive in spring 2013.
Standard equipment for all models includes Attention Assist (which monitors driver fatigue) and a radar-controlled collision-prevention system, while the options list includes adaptive headlights, blindspot assist, lane-keeping assist and speed-limit assist (with speed sign recognition).
