Citroen says its new C4 Picasso offers improved space and technology, and sets a new low in terms of CO2 emissions.

The 2013 version of Citroen's MPV comes with 37 litres more boot space than the outgoing model, and the entry-level diesel model emits just 98g/km of CO2, thanks in part to a weight reduction of 140kg.

Despite being marginally shorter than the old car, Citroen says the new C4 Picasso has more space for passengers and their luggage. The rear-seat occupants get three individual seats that can be slid back and forward. When the seats are fully back the boot capacity rivals the best in the class, at 537 litres. Boot volume increases to 630 litres with the rear seats slid forward.

The front passenger seat can either be slid back to allow the passenger to stretch out, or folded flat to increase the load space to a total maximum length of 2.5m.

The cabin also comes with a series of cubbyholes, including a lit, covered compartment on the dashboard that contains a USB port, aux-in socket and a 220V socket. There is also a plethora of compartments in the doors, under the seats, under the rear floor and a removable console between the seats on models fitted with the clutchless gearbox.

The dashboard comes with two screens. The 12-inch version can display sat-nav information, driving aids or even a photo of the driver's choice that can be uploaded from a USB stick. The seven-inch touchpad controls the air conditioning, navigation, stereo and Bluetooth, and is located on the central console.

Diesel engines will make up the core of the C4 Picasso's offering, with the e-HDi 90 Airdream diesel engine offering average fuel economy of 74.3mpg and emitting just 98g/km of CO2 when paired with the clutchless manual gearbox. The e-HDi 115 engine manages 70.6mpg and emits 104g/km with this clutchless gearbox and 105g/km with the manual.
