This is the new Hyundai i20, which will join the forthcoming Skoda Fabia and Mazda 2 in providing fresh competition for the Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen Polo when it goes on sale in January 2015.
What’s new in the 2015 Hyundai i20
The new i20 is a completely new car, and has a different chassis from the car it replaces. A 45mm extension in the wheelbase helps deliver much-improved cabin space, particularly for rear passengers. The Korean manufacturer says the car 'can comfortably seat five adults' and that the combined front and rear legroom is the best in class.
The overall length of the car is 4035mm; that's a little longer than the outgoing model, and 6cm longer than the Ford Fiesta. It follows Hyundai's recent trend – epitomised by the i10 – of launching vehicles that are large for their class. The new i20's boot capacity in S models is 326 litres; that's 36 litres up on a Fiesta's and 46 more than the latest Polo's. This is reduced in higher specification models however, with a movable boot floor.
What does the 2015 Hyundai i20 look like?
The new i20 is the first Hyundai to have been styled under the direction of Peter Schreyer, the ex-Audi designer who has been credited with the strong look adopted at Hyundai's sister firm, Kia. Schreyer is now responsible for the styling of both brands, and has been tasked with giving Hyundai a crisper 'family' look.
The i20's front end has a familiar feel, with the deep hexagonal grille that has already been seen on the i30, i40 and Santa Fe. However, the side profile of the car represents a big step over the predecessor; there's a blacked-out C-pillar at the back of the rear doors, breaking up the metal line and making the roof look as though it's floating on top of the cabin.
Hyundai hasn't released any images of the cabin. However, it has revealed that the car will be offered with an integrated rear-view camera, so the fascia will need to include some form of colour central display. This will be a key component of the front cabin, given the recent gains made by the Polo in infotainment.
The car in the initial release images has a glass roof; Hyundai has stated that the i20 will be offered with a full-length panoramic sunroof that can tilt or open fully.
2015 Hyundai i20 engines and emissions
There are five engines available from launch. There are 1.2 litre petrols, with 75ps and 85ps respectively, and a more powerful 100ps 1.4 litre petrol. There are two diesels, the 1.1 litre 75ps and a 1.4 litre 90ps. The lower-powered diesel is not available in higher trim levels. A performance variant from Hyundai's recently-announced 'N' sub-brand will follow, probably in 2016.

Hyundai i20 Prices
There are five trim levels of Hyundai i20 available, with prices for the entry level S-trim cars starting at £10,695, with range-topping Premium SE models rising to £16,725.
The S trim level gets front electric windows, remote central locking, tinted windows and a USB port. S Air models get air-conditioning, as the name implies. The greenest model in the line up is the S Blue, which gets stop-start and low-rolling-resistance tyres. All models are available with either the 1.2 75PS or 1.1CRDi diesel engines.
Hyundai expects the SE models to be the top sellers in the range. These get 16in alloy wheels. Bluetooth, cruise control and speed limiter, lane-departure warning system, reversing sensors and front fog lights. SE customers get a choice of all engines expect the 84g/km diesel. Prices start at £12,725.
Premium-trim cars are £1000 dearer than SE-spec cars but come with considerably more kit. Automatic headlights and wipers, climate control, cornering lights, projection headlamps and LED running lights are among the highlights, along with privacy glass and mobile phone docking station. Premium SE models top the range and command a £1000 levy on Premium cars. These add a panoramic sunroof, front parking sensors and heated seats and steering wheel. Engine choices are limited to the 1.2 84PS petrol and the 1.4 litre models. The smallest diesel is not available.
An automatic gearbox is available on SE models and above, but only with the 100PS petrol engine. The price premium is £900.
