2015 Jaguar XF revealed - prices, pictures and on-sale date

This is the all-new Jaguar XF, which has made its global debut at the New York motor show and will go on sale this autumn with prices starting at £32,300.

What is it?

The Jaguar XF is the larger sibling of the XE, and is built on Jaguar's new lightweight architecture, which means about 75% of its structure is made from aluminium. Because much of the car's rear structure is made from steel, its weight distribution comes in at close to 50/50.

Jaguar also says the XF's new structure is around 30% stiffer than the outgoing car. Thanks to the use of lightweight materials, the new XF weighs in as much as 190kg lighter than the outgoing car, which should contribute to much-improved fuel economy and CO2 emissions figures.

Jaguar says that 83% of parts on the XF are new, and, as well as its new structure, it also adopts the XE's suspension setup, which means double wishbones are used at the front, with an 'integral link' arrangement at the rear. The new car also borrows its electric power-assisted steering setup from the XE and F-Type.

The new XF measures 7mm shorter and 3mm lower than the current car, with a wheelbase which is 51mm longer. It's also slightly shorter than the BMW 5 Series. Despite this, Jaguar says it offers 3mm more leg room than the 5 Series.

The boot is 540 litres, which is also claimed to equal the best in the car's class - the Mercedes E-Class matches the Jaguar's bootspace, while the 5 Series offers 520 litres of space and the Audi A6 has 530 litres.

What engines does the Jaguar XF get?

The most frugal engine in the launch line-up is a 2.0-litre diesel unit from Jaguar's Ingenium family. It delivers 161bhp and 280lb ft, and emits just 104g/km of CO2. Jaguar says this is the lowest CO2 figure in this class for any non-hybrid vehicle. By comparison, BMW's 518d emits 114g/km.

Also on offer will be a 178bhp, 317lb ft 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel. Both engines will be available with an eight-speed automatic transmission that was chosen rather than a nine-speed option as it offers the best calibration. A nine-speed would have efficiency benefits, but the eight-speed offers a better torque spread.

At the top of the diesel range is a tweaked version of Jaguar's familiar twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 engine, which offers 296bhp and 516lb ft of torque.

The only petrol option which Jaguar has revealed details about is a supercharged V6, which develops 375bhp and 332lb ft of torque.

How much equipment does the Jaguar XF get?

The new XF adopts a different look inside compared to Jaguar's flagship XJ. It features a relatively sparse cockpit, with a wide centre console offering plenty of storage space, as well as a large 10.2in 'dual-view' smartphone-like touchscreen infotainment system, known as InControl Touch Pro.

Jaguar says the InControl system uses a quad-core processor and uses an "ultra-fast" ethernet network. It is said to be faster than the system offered in the XE saloon. A laser head-up display is also offered.

Also included is Jaguar's new All-Surface Progress Control system, which has been developed "for low-speed driving in adverse conditions". Jaguar says the system "manages the brakes and throttle" to maximise traction on loose or uneven surfaces, meaning the driver simply steers the vehicle.

Main instruments are displayed on a 12.3in TFT panel, which is configurable by the driver.

Jaguar will offer the new XF in Prestige, R-Sport, Portfolio and S specifications, with top-end models getting Jaguar’s Configurable Dynamics system. The system allows drivers to alter settings for the car’s dampers, steering, engine and transmission.

The options list features assistance systems like adaptive cruise control, a laser head-up display and LED headlights, while the XF’s suite of safety technology includes autonomous emergency braking, traffic sign recognition, lane-keeping as stance and lane departure warning systems.

How much will the Jaguar XF cost?

Prices for the 2015 Jaguar XF range start at £32,300, meaning the new car costs less than the current XF, which costs from £33,345.
