This is the new Bentley Bentayga, an all-new model which the company has very high hopes for.
What is it?
Bentley's first-ever SUV. Bentley showed a bold concept SUV in 2014, and speculation suggested it might be called Falcon, but the latest pictures show it looks more in line with the rest of the brand's line-up. The new look does away with the Mulsanne-esque headlights and appears to adopt front-end styling more in line with the Continental and Flying Spur. The car is named after the Roque Bentayga, a rugged mountainous area in the Canary islands.
What engines can I choose from?
Bentley has not issued specific technical details, but senior sources have confirmed that it will get the firm's 12-cylinder W12 engine, a V8 and a plug-in hybrid version. The latter version will be capable of travelling 30 miles on electric power only.
How much equipment does it come with?
This is also unknown at this stage, but it is reasonable to expect the car to be the most luxurious SUV out there. 'There will be more than one derivative, more than one trim level and we're factoring in things like Mulliner [Bentley's customisation department],' said the company's sales and marketing, boss Kevin Rose.
How much will it cost?
There's no news yet, but Bentley has said that the Bentayga will start 'just above' where top-end Range Rovers stop, so expect a price of around £130,000.
Can I get a discount?
Very unlikely. The model is hugely desirable and long waiting lists are expected initially; hundreds of cutsomers have already placed deposits without ever seeing the car.
How good are its rivals?
The Bentley SUV will compete on its own in the marketplace as a SUV costing more than £130,000. Its obvious rival is the Range Rover, specifically the luxurious range-topping Autobiography versions, which we rate as a four-star car in SDV8 form.
Anything else I should know?
We'd expect to see the Bentley Bentayga SUV before 2015 is out, ahead of a 2016 launch.
