26% of drivers have admitted to driving without road tax

More than a quarter of motorists have driven without valid road tax, according to an exclusive poll by whatcar.com.

The survey revealed that 5% of motorists regularly drive without taxing their vehicle and 21% have committed the crime once or twice.

That means that 7.2 million of Britain's estimated 28 million motorists say they have driven without road tax at some time and that 1.4 million could currently be doing so.

A recent National Audit Survey backed whatcar.com's figures, estimating that one in 20 (5%) of vehicles in the UK is untaxed.

Unpaid road tax is estimated to cost the Government £217 million a year.

74% of respondents to the poll said they had never driven without valid road tax.
