40% admit to dozing off at wheel

25 September 2007

An estimated 11.2 million British motorists have fallen asleep while driving their car, according to an exclusive whatcar.com poll.

More than one-fifth of respondents to the poll – 22% - admitted they had fallen asleep while driving once, 18% said they had done it more than once, while 60% said they had never fallen asleep while driving.

There are an estimated 28 million motorists in Britain.

Advice to avoid falling asleep at the wheel includes driving during normal waking hours only, taking frequent breaks and avoiding large meals before driving.

Drivers who feel tired while on the road are advised to pull up at the next available safe place and take a 20-30-minute nap.

If the onward journey is less than an hour, drinking the equivalent of two cups of coffee is enough to keep an average person alert.
