400,000 people have signed an anti-road-charging petition

Nearly 400,000 people have signed an online petition on the Prime Minister's website against nationwide pay-as-you-drive road-user charging.

The petition was set up by a member of the Association of British Drivers and has attracted far more signatories than any other petition on the website.

The Government, motoring groups and key transport advisors now see a nationwide system of road-user charging as inevitable, but whatcar.com polls and the petition show that opposition among the motoring community is strong.

Our poll showed that 93% of motorists are against the plans, although 47% think they could reduce congestion. Whatever the effect, 62% of motorists say pay-per-mile charges won't make them use their cars any less.
