Subaru will launch its large 4x4, the Tribeca, in the UK next year. It will cost around £27,500 to undercut established rivals such as the Volvo XC90 and BMW X5.
Although the Tribeca has been sold in America since June, the company has been undertaking feasibility studies to see if it could successfully sell the petrol-only off-roader in Europe, where a massive 66% of buyers prefer diesel.
The Tribeca will arrive in UK dealers in October 2006, however, with just one engine and transmission: a 245bhp 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol unit and a five-speed automatic gearbox.
Buyers will be able to pick a five- or seven-seat package. Both will be the same length, the third row of two forward-facing seats folding flat under the floor like in a Vauxhall Zafira people carrier.
Engineers are making changes to the cabin before sales start in a year’s time. European buyers expect higher quality interior plastics than their American counterparts, Subaru says.
