5th Saab 9-X

This concept will certainly reach production and marks another step in Saab's goal of expanding into market sectors where it is currently unrepresented.

It's not yet clear if the 9-X name will become 9-1, placing the small four-seater in Saab's line-up, but the entry-level model will rival the Volvo C30, BMW 1 Series and Audi A3.

Saab says the car will be a sporty, practical hatchback and share parts with the next-generation Vauxhall Astra. It will, however, have its styling and tuning tailored to give it a Saab character.

The concept car is powered by 1.4-litre biofuel-powered engine linked to a hybrid system. Estimated emissions are 105g/km of carbon dioxide, aided by aerodynamic tricks such as a rood spoiler that retracts at speeds above 43mph to improve aerodynamics.

Other features on the concept car include a slide-out floor, that extends from the boot when the split hatch is opened. It is covered in a high-friction rubber carpet, which grips items and holds them in place. These innovations are not expected to make production, however.

Production is expected to begin in 2010.

Why it's a highlight: Highlights Saab's growing horizons; bold styling; eco edge.
