A million motorists close to driving ban

Monday, April 02, 2007

More than 4.5 million motorists have points on their licence for speeding, and over one-in-five is just one conviction away from a ban - that's over one million drivers.

The figures come in a study for Direct Line insurance, which interviewed nearly 2300 drivers. 14% said a ban would mean they would lose their job - and this figure rises to one-in-five among male drivers.

Motorists have paid over £330m in fines in the past three years, and the research also found that almost half of speeding convictions were for a breach of the speed limit of less than 10mph.

Three-quarters of drivers support government proposals to give those breaking the speed limit by less than 10mph fewer points.
