Accidental deaths spark road review

Monday, December 17, 2007

The number of accidental deaths on the roads is being probed by the Transport Select Committee.

The investigation has been prompted because road fatalities account for 25% of all accidental deaths in Britain and 80% of accidental deaths among 15- to 19-year-olds.

Current initiatives to reduce the number of deaths are set until 2010, and the committee is now investigating what measures need to be taken beyond that date. It will then report its recommendations back to the Government.

Areas under scrutiny include drink-driving policies, a shortage of trained staff to provide road education, a comparison of Britain's record with that of other European nations and the success and failure of past policies.
