Motorists are expected to get their first look at Alfa 's Mini rival at next March's Geneva motor show.
Although no official name has been given to the car, which is due to go on sale in the UK next summer, it has been dubbed the Alfa Junior.
The car will be based on stablemate Fiat's Grande Punto platform, although the suspension will be considerably more sophisticated to improve its ride and handling and justify a price tag that is expected to be from around £12,500.
No details of engines have been revealed, but the line-up is expected to include Fiat's new Multiair technology, which boosts engine efficiency.
