Alfa is building a new engine for its upcoming 4C

Alfa has announced details of a new 1.8-litre petrol engine, which is expected to provide the power for the 4C sports car.

The turbocharged four-cylinder engine will be built in Italy from early 2013 and will have a maximum power output of 296bhp. It has an all-aluminium construction and will meet Euro 6 emissions standards, which come in to force in January 2015.

The 4C is due to go on sale in early 2013. As well as providing the power for that car, the new engine – with lower power outputs - will drive the next generation of Alfa models, including the replacement for the current 159.
