UK motorists who are disqualified while driving in Ireland can soon expect driving bans on their return to Britain.

Similarly, Irish drivers banned in the UK will be disqualified from driving when they get back to Eire, after the British and Irish Governments agreed a deal to keep disqualified drivers off their roads.

Road safety minister Dr Stephen Ladyman said: 'If a UK driver is disqualified while driving in Ireland, then he or she should not escape the consequences when they return home.'

The deal is thought to be the first of its kind between two EU countries, and is expected to come into force early next year.

Currently, drivers convicted of offences such as dangerous driving, hit-and-run driving, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, speeding or driving while already disqualified in Ireland face no similar bans on their return to the UK.
