When your name's Volvo you can’t afford to take liberties with safety. It was one of the pillars on which the Swedish company built a reputation long before it began to go to town on Scandinavian style and premium quality.

Which explains why, a couple of weeks ago, I got notification to take my car in to the local dealer for a couple of safety recalls. Apparently, there’s a weak connector between the driver’s head airbag and the steering wheel module that can result in the airbag being disabled. Volvo has also found that the bonnet can fly up if it’s left in the semi-open position and the car is then driven.

I was offered a collection-and-delivery service, but opted to take my S60 to Volvo Cars West London (020 8200 9797) to have the remedies made for free. Thankfully, I wasn’t there long: two hours and I left with a much cleaner – and safer – car than the one I’d arrived in.

There had actually been no signs of anything untoward from our car prior to the recall. It has settled into its role as a business tool nicely. It’s smart, comfortable, well-appointed and brisk – and with the ability to cover 700 miles on a tank of diesel in motorway use, it’s not upsetting the accountants, either.
