Suzuki Swift

An almost unheard of, all-but-empty M1 provided the ideal opportunity give the Swift's standard cruise control a proper test this week. I was impressed with how smooth it made the drive, even up steep inclines there was no noticeable strain on the engine.

Revs seemed consistent, so much so that I'm hopeful that when it comes to interrogating the fuel log I'll see a gain in mpg. I'll let you know next week.

In a matter of months, white wiped the shine clear off silver’s coating of the cars on British roads.

According to paint maker DuPont, white is now the most popular choice for car buyers, and not just in the UK but the world. It’s interesting how fashions can change the landscape of our roads, sometimes seemingly overnight.

Glancing out of What Car?s office windows last week, our car park seemed a sea of alabaster – a third of all the motors parked there in fact – broken only by the odd spattering of red, blue and grey.

This particular line caught my eye, because (and I don’t think I’m being biased here) even dressed identically to its car park counterparts our Swift Sport is still striking, its paint job elegantly picking out each sporty line.

On a dark, wet and squally evening this week the last thing I wanted, I realised as I got back to the Swift with one large and unwieldy clothes horse, was to be fiddling around in the rain collapsing the rear bench.

The fact the car's boot is only small still escapes me from time to time so I find myself buying all manner of bulky, oddly shaped things that it takes a special kind of shoehorning to get home. However, this time luck - or rather space - was on my side and I managed to wedge in the metal frame with only a slight disturbing of the parcel shelf, and only a minimal drenching. There was even room for a couple of shopping bags.

Snow again. I expected the Swift's winter tyres to be long gone by now, but no, it looks like I'm going to be relying on them for a little while longer.

If only the car's washers could be weather-proofed as effectively. Even with super anti-freeze strength screen wash, the jets have a tendency to seize up when the temperature drops.

It's no fun on long journeys when stopping every half hour to wipe the screen yourself means you also get to experience the elements as acutely as the nozzles. Roll on spring.
