Our cars: Kia Ceed - April
Week ending April 5
Driven this week 144 miles
We now know the 1.6-litre 126bhp diesel engine in our Kia Ceed pretty well - so I was interested to try the more modest 1.4-litre motor in a Ceed SW (estate) the other evening.
There's definitely a bit more shove in the larger motor, although I can't say I found the 1.4 particularly short of puff. In fact it was quite easy to maintain relaxed, reasonably swift progress in it - to the point where I was beginning to question the merit of spending the extra cash on the more potent engine. The 1.4 is a bit noisier when pushed, admittedly - but if anything the 1.6 has a slightly more gruff note at lower revs.
Here's the down side, though; Kia doesn't sell the 1.4 CRDi in anything other than entry-level '1' spec - so if you want elements like electric windows in the rear, LED daytime running lights, parking sensors or even alloy wheels along with your diesel economy, you need to stump up for the 1.6 CRDi. Crafty chaps, those Koreans.
