It's only week two with our Audi A3 Saloon and we've already racked up another 400 miles, including a decent motorway slog up to the Midlands.

I'm no less impressed with the A3's cabin than I was when it arrived. However, I have noticed that the 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel is a little more noisy than the 2.2 in my previous long-termer, the Mazda 6.

The What Car? road test team inform me that the Mazda's motor is one of the best four-cylinder units out there, though - and that the Audi's unit is still refined enough when compared with rivals from Mercedes and BMW.

That may be the case - but I can't help feeling that in this area at least, the so-called 'premium brands' have been trumped by a mainstream Japanese manufacturer.

Our latest long-term test car has turned up in the car park - the Audi A3 Saloon. We've gone for the same 2.0 TDI Sport specification that lifted our 2014 Executive Car title. However, since Audi's supply chain is running at full tilt, we had to compromise in some areas to get a vehicle this side of autumn.

That means our car was plucked from Audi's stock lists - so it has a few more options than we'd normally go for. Read the full hello article to see what equipment it has and what we think of it so far.
