Audi has revealed the first official pictures of its new 4x4, ahead of its launch at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
The Q7 is Audi’s first genuine off-roader and will go head-to-head with premium rivals such as the BMW X5 and new Mercedes M-Class.
Expect prices to start around the £32,000 mark when it arrives in UK showrooms during the first few months of 2006.
Although full details will not be revealed until September, Audi has confirmed the Q7 will be available with a diesel V6 or a petrol V8 engine from launch, but other engines are likely to follow. The V8 is expected to be a detuned version of the 414bhp 4.2-litre engine recently announced for the new Audi RS4 sports saloon.
The Q7 shares its 4x4 underpinnings with the VW Touareg and the Porsche Cayenne. Audi claims it will have a luxuriously equipped cabin and, like the Volvo XC90, it will be capable of carrying seven people using two foldaway third-row seats.
Audi has decided to break with its usual A-lettering badge system. Instead, the Q in the new model’s name denotes its use of Quattro all-wheel drive, while the 7 indicates its position in the Audi range between the A6 and A8 in price.
