Our cars: Used Nissan Qashqai - August
Week ending August 31
Driven this week: 488 miles
Our Nissan Qashqai has had its fair share of rattles, and I've just discovered one more. At the time, I had a couple of bikes on board and dismissed it, but on closer inspection it seems the driver's seat base has picked up an annoying squeak.
I've had a hunt around under the seat, but can't see anything obvious. For now, I’ve decided to leave it, but if the sound persists, it's definitely something I’ll be flagging up when it comes to servicing the Qashqai in less than 4000 miles from now.

I really like the Nissan Qashqai, just not this particular version.
The gearbox has only five forward ratios, and they're all short, so the engine revs away noisily on the motorway. Then there's the vague clutch pedal and sharp accelerator, which make it hard to drive smoothly at low speeds. Try to park and you'll sound like a learner, even once you've learned how the pedals feel.
It's a shame, because in most other ways the Qashqai is a brilliant – and rightly popular – small family car.

The digital readout in the Qashqai informs you of a few things on start up, that the oil is ok, how much fuel is left – the usual. However, I've been watching another with interest; a constantly decreasing number next to a little screw driver letting me know how long is left until the next service.
It's currently at around 4000 miles, but I thought I'd look into prices now. To honour Nissan's cared 4 approved used scheme I have to have it serviced at a Nissan-certified dealer, but with prices for petrol models starting at a fixed £109 for 'bronze' service, fingers crossed it shouldn't break the bank. A 'silver' service is £169 and 'gold' £209 for the full works. To find out what these include, visit nissanaftersales.co.uk.

I had the chance to drive a '59 plate diesel Qashqai this week, in exactly the same Visia trim as our used long-term test car. Despite the 1.5 dCi engine being a tad noisy it had plenty of pull, and it also had something our Qashqai desperately needs - a sixth gear.
The other attractive thing about the diesel version is fuel economy. I'm averaging around 34mpg, 8mpg less than the official combined figure. Officially, the diesel manages 54mpg and although it would realistically be a little less than that, there's no doubt I'd be getting more miles for my money.

I’ve had more than a couple of text messages from Nissan over the past few weeks reminding me that the Qashqai’s MoT test and service are due. The staff at WLMG Nissan in Shepperton (0845 811 0349) were happy to help and I booked in our used SUV for its annual check.
It took just a day and although it’s possible to put a car through the MoT test for less than the £45 it cost me, Nissan’s approved used scheme stipulates the car must be serviced at a main dealer. I was happy, though, because I received a full breakdown of the car’s condition and was given a print off of its emissions tests, too. They even cleaned the car.
The only odd thing about the experience was the pricing of the new wiper blades I needed. Confusingly, Nissan charges £27 for one, or £30 for two…
