Fresh back from its trip to Wales, this week the Grand C4 Picasso had another long trip to undertake.

I had to go to County Durham for a job last Tuesday, and that meant a 600 mile round trip, including a stop in Bedfordshire, before returning back to my home in Twickenham.

Two things impressed me by the end of the journey. Firstly, the upright driving position means that the C4 remains comfortable even after heavy stints at the wheel. I am beginning to dread the day when the Citroen leaves us and I have to get behind the wheel of something with more laid back seating. And secondly, the trip computer at one stage said I was heading for a record 700 miles from a single tank.

A quick calculation back at base revealed the car had averaged 51mpg. I think that's pretty good going, considering I wasn't trying for any records and it's still a big car.

Last weekend the family and I went for a four-night excursion to the Green Man Festival in Wales, which was yet another test of the Grand C4 Picasso’s practicality.

As we were camping, it had to cope with a list of items that included three tents, five days’-worth of food, camping stoves, cool boxes, not to mention five people.

Its has to be said, by the time all that was packed inside, the phrase ‘loaded to the gunnels’ came to mind, but, credit to the large Citroen, it did all fit.

With that challenge met, I started to wonder how the fully laden MPV would drive, bearing in mind this was going to be a 300-mile round trip.

I need not have worried. The Grand C4’s turbodiesel engine still had plenty of punch and settled into a relaxed cruise on the motorway. It also felt just as stable as it normally does and made the drive a relaxing experience. It even managed the whole trip with a good quarter of a tank of fuel left.

The only issue is that the tyre-pressure monitor keeps pinging at me. Unfortunately this is not one of the many false alarms – the driver’s side front tyre has a slow puncture, so a trip to a tyre repair centre is next on the list.

Last weekend it was time for the Grand C4 Picasso and myself to venture into unchartered territory.

A friend of mine loves his golf and decided to organise a boys day out, to be spent on the green – or in my case, in the rough.

Not being a golfer myself, it wasn’t just my swing that worried me. On the basis that the C4 was the biggest car at our disposal, I was nominated to be the driver for the day, so I did wonder if the Picasso was up to the challenge. The only thing I did know about golf was that it involves a lot of kit.

As it happens, I needn’t have doubted the versatility and practicality that the big Citroen is capable of. The boot managed to swallow four sets of clubs – helped by the fact that it is so wide they could be fitted in widthways – plus a trolley. Believe it or not, there was room enough to fit a couple more sets if required.

With all the kit easily taken care of at the rear, the rest of the interior was left free and uncluttered, meaning it was able to carry four beefy blokes in comfort. The C4’s cabin is light an airy front or rear, so there were no complaints concerning a lack of head or legroom. 

The air-conditioning was the only thing that was slightly under par. We were blessed with another of the gorgeous, sunny days that have become such a welcome feature of summer 2014. On particularly balmy days the climate control does seem to struggle to bring the temperature down quickly if the car’s been sitting in sun. I am sure the large cabin with lots of glass area is part of the problem, but as these qualities make living with the Grand C4 Picasso so pleasant most of the time, it’s a handicap I can live with.
