True MPG: 36.9Three-year cost: £18,252You can’t get much more family-oriented than a seven-seat MPV – and aggressive pricing means you can pick up a Peugeot 5008 for well under £19k if you go by our Target Price. The big French MPV’s spacious cabin and flexible seating system are matched by solid interior quality.
Don’t think you’re being short-changed by a 1.6-litre diesel engine, either. The entry-level diesel motor has 110bhp and more than enough torque to satisfy most buyers. It doesn’t match its claimed fuel economy figure of 51.3mpg in our True MPG test, but 36.9mpg isn’t horrendous for such a large vehicle. The official CO2 emissions figure of 135g/km puts it in a respectable company car tax band, too.
The baby diesel is a particularly refined engine. When you add that to good sound insulation and a suspension set-up that gets caught out by only the very worst bumps, the 5008 becomes a tempting option for a large family looking for a comfortable cruiser.
