What Car? Greenest MPV: Vauxhall Zafira 1.9 CDTi (120)
Seven people and a potential 46mpg: deinitely sounds like a green champion to us.
The winning Zafira uses the 1.9-litre common-rail diesel in its 118bhp guise, although the identically sized 148bhp version is almost as good on emissions.
The cheaper, greener diesel Zafira records a CO2 output of 165g/km, beating all its closest rivals and bringing new virtues to an already long list of talents.
However, had this contest taken place last year, the freshly launched MPV might not have won – only with the passing of the Euro IV emissions 2006 deadline did Vauxhall have to include a particulate filter as standard.
The £300 it added to the price is definitely money well spent on reducing soot emissions to a bare minimum.
Price: From £16,995
MPG: 46.2
CO2 emissions: 165g/km
Honda FR-V 2.2 i-CTDi Any modern diesel engine should create a green contender – and Honda's powerful 2.2-litre does especially well for the FR-V.
It records 45mpg and 167g/km, making it one of the cleanest six-seaters around.
Price: From £17,300
MPG: 44.8
CO2 emissions: 167g/km
Fiat Doblo 1.3 16v MultiJetThis isn't a beauty contest – the Fiat Doblo is included here purely because of its green credentials.
Impressive credentials they are, too: 51mpg, 145g/km of CO2, seven seats in the Family version, and all for just £10,395.
Even better, Euro IV regulations forced Fiat to fit a particulate trap to the 1.3 diesel, so not only is it an ultra-clean MPV, it's also one of the cleanest cars, full stop. The winning Zafira is a substantially better MPV, but the Doblo is cleaner.
Price: From £10,395
MPG: 51.4
CO2 emissions: 145g/km
