Britain's roadworks are the safest and best managed in Europe, according to an AA survey.

The investigation looked at 50 sites across Europe. Of the three British sites inspected separately during the day and night, one visit rated very good, four good and one acceptable.

Those results earned Britain the top position in the European-wide survey. Britain's sites scored an average of 83%, compared to the European average of 40%.

Of the sites analysed across Europe, 17 were good, 17 acceptable, 11 poor and two very poor.

However, the best site in Europe was in Austria, with Britain's daylight works at Holmesdale Tunnel on the M25 north of London ranked second.
