Looks goodThe
Chevrolet Captiva is a rather nice-looking compact 4x4 in the mould of a
Nissan X-Trail.
It has not been seen in the UK before, and won't be seen again until next year. Its arrival in showrooms was put back from this summer to the second quarter of 2007 – more than a year and a half after it first broke cover.
That means it will be first rolling out onto our roads around the same time as the
Vauxhall Antara upon which it is based.
The Antara is only coming as a five-seater, but the Chevrolet will also be available as a seven-seater. Engines will include a 2.4-litre petrol and Chevrolet's first ever diesel - a 150bhp 2.0-litre unit.
Why so long?Chevrolet says there isn't enough space on existing production lines for right-hand drive models. UK cars are being built in Korea and the first model will be the diesel car, followed by a petrol in the summer.
Expect to pay a starting price of £16,000 for the five-seater petrol, rising to £24,000 for a seven-seater diesel, which Chevrolet claims will be the lowest-priced seven-seater in the UK, in direct competition with the
Hyundai Santa Fe and the
Kia Sorento.

And what's this? The Suburban Carryall that was unveiled in 1936 and goes on sale this winter. Alright, then, that's not true. Chevy's putting the Carryall on display to show it invented the crossover MPV/4x4 market 70 years ago.
