British International Motor Show - Dodge

18 July 2006
What next from Dodge?
After the Caliber and SRT-10 (a.k.a the Viper), Dodge is going to launch this brutish-looking 4x4 in the UK.

It's called the Nitro and makes a major point of standing out with some no-holds-barred, in-your-face styling. Sales will start in the UK in the first half of next year.

A pair of V6 petrol engines is lined up for the US market that develop 210bhp or 255bhp. In the UK, however, we will get a 3.7-litre V6 petrol and a diesel. Company bosses also suggest that high-performance SRT versions are also likely.

SRT-what?
SRT - Street and Racing Technology. It's the name that the Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep brands reserve for their most powerful versions, such as the 300bhp SRT-4 Dodge Caliber (arriving next year), or the 420bhpGrand Cherokee SRT-8 that's just gone on sale.

So, considering the company's not frightened of putting some serious firepower under the bonnet of a 4x4, and bearing in mind that Dodge's whole ethos is about affordable power, we wouldn't be at all surprised if there was a SRT version of the Nitro to look forward to.

How big is it?
It's about the same size as a Nissan X-Trail, so prices could start at around or below £18,000.
